Born in 1977 in Romania, Mircea Cantor is an internationally renowned artist working with multiple media such as video, photography, and installation. In 2004, Cantor won the Prix Fondation d’entreprise Ricard, followed by the important Prix Marcel Duchamp, in 2011. His works employ a deep symbolism and sense of irony, often entrenched in Romanian politics and culture. Developing webs of references that evoke concepts such as ideology, belonging, and cultural displacement, Cantor operates with a careful empathy towards the subjects portrayed.
