Mark Lewis curator for the Open Horizons Juried Exhibition awarded this painting a second place finish and made these comments: Mike Brewer, in his painting Ashlyn, has tackled what I consider to be the most challenging subject of all for a traditional , realist painter, the human figure. Everything is just right, the anatomy, the drawing, the foreshortening, and those are just the first hurdles. The translucency, reflected light and control of the edges make the skin come to life, demonstrating a mastery of oil paint that only comes with countless hours of devotion and practice.
