Nike II took flight in bronze in 2021. I sculpted the original Nike II piece directly in plaster in 2017 as a contemporary commentary on the classic sculpture, Nike of Samothrace, created in the 2nd century BCE. This headless winged figure represents the goddess of victory and is a transition in my body of work moving away from the linear erect pieces I had made in years past.
As my work starts to open up and take flight, I find these winged sculptures represent my path as an artist as I move away from the the linear stagnant pieces I had made in years past.
As always, my intention as an arts is to take the viewer on a kind of “Sunday drive” as I direct the viewer along the contrast of positive and negative shapes to create an inner world of contrast between light and dark within the shadows and crevices my sculptures create as the eye follows the contour line of the shapes that are created in my work.
