Free Falling
- Oak galls
- Karen Turcotte
I consider oak galls to be little houses. An oak tree senses the intrusion of the oak wasp larvae and
through a hormonal reaction, builds a ‘house’ around the larvae. After the larvae has matured into a
wasp, it drills itself out of the now oak hard sphere and other little creatures use it to overwinter. I find
the form compelling and have worked with oak galls for over 15 years.
