These candle holders for the Sabbath recreate the act of the woman covering her eyes prior to the onset of Sabbath. The oldest woman in the house lights the candles, and then closes her eyes to say the blessing, ending with "L’hadlik ner shel Shabbat". By saying the blessing, she invites the blessings/restrictions of Sabbath upon herself, and thus cannot light the candles after saying it. Thus, she is able to light the candles, cover her eyes to say the blessing, and then see the Shabbat light after, fulfilling the mitzvah.
