The sighting of a rare grey whale of the coast of Massachusetts about the time of painting prompted this work. Michael is inspired by the paintings of the 19th century British artist, JMW Turner whose whaling are among his favorites. Michael pays homage to that work while the evocations of the sea and the majesty of the animals themselves are the subject.
