Sauer studied at the Cincinnati Academy of Art and the Cleveland School of Art under prolific artists such as Herman Henry Wessel. He later taught at the Dayton Art Institute.
He became an instructor for commercial art at the Dayton Art Institute. He also illustrated a book on Tropical Fish and was a founder of a Dayton Society of Etchers.
