In 2000, Michael A. Smith and Paula Chamlee shipped their
old Land Rover to Europe, configured to accommodate their large-format camera equipment and camping gear. They
drove to Italy where, working separately, they explored the landscape and the small towns and villages of Tuscany.
During their travels, Chamlee and Smith photographed everything; including the quarries in the Carrara region
where this photograph is taken.
After beginning a career as a painter in the mid-1980s, Paula Chamlee discovered photography and quickly found direct involvement with the world outside the studio to be irresis-
tible. In the years since then, she has traveled extensively, making her photographs both in the United States and
abroad. She has been teaching photography, lecturing,
co-conducting (with Michael A. Smith) photographic
workshops and master classes. She has presented countless
solo exhibitions and published nine books of her work. Her photographs are in the collections of the Cincinnati Museum
of Art, the Library of Congress and the Philadelphia Museum
of Art as well as many public and private collections.
