The folk art tradition of carving santos figures or wooden
saints used for household devotion is found throughout
Latin and South America. Traditionally, these small port-
able figures were created by often anonymous, self-taught
rural carvers. These figures are revered as manifestations
of the saints’ spirit and as objects of devotion.

Cuc Ixquactap lives and works in Nahualá, Guatemala
Where he makes furniture for a living and carves these
to express his faith to a local audience. He does not
produce these for the tourist trade, however the income supplements his other activities in furniture making and
his wife Maria's subsistence farming.
