I’ve long been drawn to Fire – the brilliant, beautiful colors, the incredible power and fearsomeness of nature unleashed. Night Fire is all of that, a glowing scene of devastation, yet there is the possibility of redemption. I’ve lived in the San Fernando Valley all my life, experiencing earthquakes, mudslides, flooding, and wildfires. My fire paintings began when California’s fire season blurred into weekly super fires in the hills and communities up and down the state. The nightly news would show images similar to those I was painting. It seems this has always been so, but I remember otherwise. When I was growing up, the skies were cleaner, the hills greener, and there were no freeways, just lots of fields and farms. The tragedy is that things have only gotten worse. In the 20+ years since I put on canvas and paper my views of our fires, these conflagrations have been more intense, devastating, and sadly all year long.
