This print's unique inking features a white background with multiple blues across the pack ice and a very lovely area underneath the ice where translucent layers of ink overlap.

This series precedes Pack Ice II and represents another aspect of the experience of being locked in pack ice in June 2019 while on The Arctic Circle Residency. "Pack Ice I" depicts an isolated section of open pack ice, and its copperplate remains intact as an elegiac image unlike the methodical destruction at the heart of "Pack Ice II."
