May Babcock
An artist who gives voice to waterways by turning seaweed, sediment, and plants into paper.
MessageSEA OF SECRET COLORS
Foraged seaweeds are embedded in paper pulp by the artist during the wet hand papermaking process, and bladderwrack seaweed is layered on top to impart its natural colors and shapes onto the paper. Seaweed and pulp are pressed and dried together, resulting in an extraordinarily detailed preservation of the aquatic species and subtle eco-print of the bladderwrack. Ocean flora is layered inside a natural, organic, tactile, imperfect, translucent handmade paper complete with feathery 'deckled edges.'
My artwork acts as witness to the living sea, and poignant evidence of human activity, while celebrating the beauty and natural colors found in seaweeds.
This is Stringy Acid Kelp (Desmarestia viridis), a brown seaweed found in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island.

A mesmerizing, beautiful display of seaweed in handmade paper (I've been told they look even better in person than online).
