The AMI project began in 2008. The AMI shape appeared in my sketches, with a name. AMI is a perfect asymmetrical biomorphic shape, celebrating line and space. It shares the enigmatic nature of apparently simple, but utterly complex and enchanting, things. It evolved for more than ten years before I began to see it as a coherent body of work.
The AMI paintings are not pictures of something: they are something. They are iconic, amiable, companions. The roots of AMI are wide and deep. When we look at the history of twentieth century western visual art, we can see how the AMI project emerges from the dynamic evolutionary process. The ten paintings are conceptually sophisticated and exquisitely executed. They employ unique materials, devices and solutions. They make significant contributions to the evolution of the visual arts.
