Zarco Guerrero has been working with apprentices for over 20 years. These artists are trained in the techniques of making, repairing, caring, and performing in the different kinds of masks used at Cultural Coalition’s festivals and by performing arts organizations around the Valley. Apprentices often study under Zarco for multiple years.

First, they learn Zarco’s style, which is a blend of different styles and standards (Japanese, Balinese, Mexican). They learn to hone their mask making and storytelling skills, and see a project through from beginning to end. All materials, studio space, and instruction are provided by Zarco and the apprentices are invited to practice their performance and storytelling skills at Cultural Coalition’s festivals.

Upon reaching a certain level of proficiency, the apprentices create a mask of their own with Zarco’s assistance. The goal is for each apprentice to complete a collection of work and leave with the skills and experience to continue making their own masks and thrive as a working artist.

Apprentices keep the legacy of storytelling through mask making alive!

These masks were on loan to the Mask Alive Art Collection for this pop-up exhibition, and are available as a traveling installation for a group show or as individual artists or pieces.
