Part of the Ollin Yoliztli Calaca Series. Masks created over the duration of 3-4 years. While creating this collection, the artist developed and perfected his own style of painting for the calaca masks.
Ollin Yoliztli is a Phoenix based dance group that performs traditional Mexican Folklore dances. Cultural Coalition has partnered with them for decades, educating the public and keeping Mexican traditions alive within the community.
Calaca mask with off-white painted base. Designs painted primarily with purple, orange, and green color scheme. Border of eyes painted in blue and outlined in purple. Upside down triangle painted at the top center of the forehead. Purple, upside-down triangular line that curves in at the ends painted just below the orange triangle. Swirly green line on each side of the forehead. Green zig-zag line painted on the cheeks. Orange lines painted below the mouth, on the chin, and on the nose. Outer border of teeth outlined in pink, inner border outlined in purple. Small, green paint strokes above the mouth; the center one painted orange. Two orange dots on each cheek.
