Part of the Ollin Yoliztli Calaca Series. Masks created over the duration of 3-4 years. While creating this collection, the artist developed and perfected his own style of painting for the calaca masks.
Ollin Yoliztli is a Phoenix based dance group that performs traditional Mexican Folklore dances. Cultural Coalition has partnered with them for decades, educating the public and keeping Mexican traditions alive within the community.
Calaca mask with off-white painted base. Purple, orange, and blue color scheme. Top half of forehead painted purple with swirly designs appearing in the off-white base. Thick, orange line painted on lower half of forehead. Top border of eyes painted in blue. Bottom border painted with purple triangular shapes. Purple nose tip. Orange and blue lines on each cheek. Blue zig-zag, swirly lines on each side of the mouth. One orange rounded line on the chin. Purple circle on the chin with and off-white center. Outer border of teeth outlined in pink, inner border outlined in purple. Red gem on both sides of the mouth. Six gems on the forehead, two purple, two yellow, one red, and one pink.
