Measuring over 700,000 light years across, this is one of
the largest barred spiral galaxies known. The elongated
shape may result from constant interaction with forces
from a smaller galaxy that is visible just above the center
of the spiral.

Spiral galaxies like NGC 6872 are known as the birthplace
of stars. The outer edges of this spiral contain a
large amount of star-forming material (hydrogen and
helium) detected in the ultraviolet spectrum.
