On September 21, 1989, Hurricane Hugo devastated Charleston, SC packing winds of 135 miles per hour. The artist's studio was reduced to rubble. Derived from an aerial photograph, the batik depicts the hurricane off shore of Charleston, with its menacing eye staring into the harbor.
