- From Ellen's Irises
Yellow and purple irises dancing in the garden in the sunlight bring delight in the summer garden. The irises that inspired the original painting are Bearded Irises which are grown from rhizomes. They have 3 sepals that droop downwards with a tuft of filaments growing down their center. These are the "beards". The three upward facing petals are called standards. Hybridizers have created thousands of color combinations from these different parts of the Iris which will keep me painting in my studio for years to come.
