Her memories became more palpable with each smell of the rose. My drawing is about how smell can unexpectedly bring back a flood of memories. I wanted some elements of the drawing to be more solid, real and others to be less tangible, distant and faded. I imagine that this woman has just put the rose in her hair, she breathes in catching the strong sent of the flower and then exhales the images from somewhere deep inside. She is surprised by this sudden vision of such a distant, faded place. A place that was once very special to her.
As my drawing will be displayed in the skylight I have left spaces for the sky to show through. I imagine the drawing will look different as the weather changes. I really like this idea, memories change, we recall them differently, we remember things differently and we believe the versions we replay to ourselves. I like the thought of rain settling on my drawing on a cold, wet day adding a further layer of distortion to the image and memories.
