Composed of beach found, hand ground pigments. The title ‘1 Minute 3 Seconds’ is derived from the difference in time it takes the sun to rise between 2 beaches on the Solway Firth.
The first beach (Powhillimont) is the source of the red brick pigment, the second the (Balcary Bay) the source of the mussel shell pigment. The gold ring Sun shape is borrowed from Neolithic Ring Petroglyph marks found across Dumfries and Galloway.
In these pieces, Mark uses the idea of ‘time to travel’ as the theme in both geographic distance and time as ages pass.
There has been a human presence, leaving traces in this part of Scotland for Millennia. The Solway Firth collection seeks to bring some of these traces to the contemporary consciousness reminding us of our impact on its environment and the environments impact on us.
