The origins of the Marianne “goddess of liberty” symbol date back to 1775 when a French artist first painted her as a symbol of French liberty. The image became famous in 1792 when France changed from a monarchy to a republic after a revolution. Marianne was chosen to represent freedom.
My version of Marianne has a neo-representation of liberty.
She is questioning if "liberty" is natural. She is skeptical about it since so much is happening in these "empowering times".
Climate change, war, abortion laws, and women violence and discrimination. Marianne was created when Mahsa Amini was brutally killed as a form of embodiment and revenge. We are all Mariannes & Mahsas.
We are still fighting for equality, transparency, and human rights! Stand up for your women, your mum, daughter, friend, neighbor...
Notes: Oil painting on layered antique paper. The quality of the form belongs to an antique pocketbook, the artist bought while visiting Paris on August 2022. One of the artist's favorite love stories of old times is "Romeo and Juliet" from Shakespeare.
"It is magic to build your own blank canvas and paint on top of a love story. Marianne would appreciate it!"
