Marina Emphietzi
Holding On by Marina Emphietzi Image: Through my art I seek to connect the human experience with nature. I am predominantly a seascape artist however I was inspired to create this new series of work ‘Vessels of water’,
when we lived in Ethiopia a few years ago. I saw and learnt things that previously unfamiliar
to me. Looking back, I would say that I took a lot of things for granted till then. After
observing real poverty and the way in which so many Ethiopians dealt with it and remained
incredibly cheerful, I started perceiving human life and ‘water’ differently.
Coming from an island, for me the sea has been an ever-present powerful life-force in
seeming endless quantity, whereas ‘water’ in Ethiopia was always a scarcity apart from
during the monsoon season that lashes the country from late June to late August bringing
flooding, clogged gutters and floating debris.
