After several trips to India, I was struck by the beautiful jali screens in ancient palaces. Women lived sequestered behind these elaborate lattices, able to look out to courtyards and streets but never seen themselves. Their daily lives were restricted. This sculpture was inspired by those beautifully designed screens, but I wondered how scarred these women must have felt not being able to participate in the world around them.
