General of the People - General Võ Nguyên Giáp is one of the most talented military leaders of the 20th century. But he was also a history teacher before becoming a military leader. Võ Nguyên Giáp's military career is highly humane, shown in the fact that he always valued and protected the lives of the people and soldiers, and treated even the enemy humanely. He is a symbol of the patriotic spirit, resilient will, and compassion of the Vietnamese people. In the original photo, the photographer depicted General Võ Nguyên Giáp raising his fist, often used as a symbol of the determination to defeat all enemies. However, when translating from the photograph to the ceramic mosaic medium, artist Mai Van Nhon omitted the photographer's hand with the fist. The artist's thinking is that the fist here should be understood in a general sense: the determination of humans, not to back down or surrender to difficulties and challenges. However, the artist preferred to depict a kind, humane, and compassionate general. Each small ceramic piece, after being fired at high temperatures in a kiln, reveals a rich range of colors and shades. These pieces were carefully selected by the artist, cut into various shapes and sizes, and meticulously placed in each position and detail, creating a unique and one-of-a-kind artwork. This is how the artwork "General of the People" was born. This artwork was exhibited at the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum in 2017.
