DARK LEFT – DARK RIGHT
1980
“Dark Left – Dark Right” was a series of drawings, but it was also a meditative event. Working on Fabriano Rembrandt paper, I carefully measured each sheet, and then starting at the bottom, lay down drafting tape before gently putting in soft graphite. I used the heel of my hand, or a piece of silk shirt cuff, to rub the graphite into the paper, taking care not to rub it so hard that it became glossy. I was pleased with the rhythm and musicality of the finished drawings, this variation on a theme.
I was also satisfied with the process that yielded them: I wanted to see if I had the stamina to do it. The finished works represent hours of taping, applying graphite, washing hands, removing tape, repeating over and over. It makes me happy to test my own strength with these repetitive, concentrated tasks and projects. I’m so happy while working, making each iteration as well and carefully as I can.
