Canuto Avila was born in San Nicolas, Cebu on January 19, 1878. He studied under a Spanish tutor at 15, and then enrolled at the Colegio Seminario de San Carlos. He is known for his religious works, portraits, sculptures and vertical format landscapes. His contemporaries include Raymundo Francia, Gonzalo Abellana, Simeon Padriga, and Lucas Perez A. Alburo.
He produced religious murals for around 20 churches and convents in Cebu, Bohol, and other parts of the Visayas. He painted Visayan rural landscapes in a vertical canvas format, showing scenes depicting activities and occupations, such as farmers in fields and peddlers on country roads. His landscapes also showed the influence of Japanese and Chinese scroll paintings.
He also painted backdrops for plays, using what he called the de aqua technique, which uses muralo powder in water-based paints.
