Artist: Robert Kasimir (Austrian, 1914-2002)
Robert Kasimir was an Austrian painter and printmaker, best known for his detailed etchings of European and American architecture. His work was especially notable for his early adoption and development of color etching through a multiple-plate process, resulting in uniquely complex and layered compositions. Born to the famous printmakers Luigi Kasimir and Tanna Kasimir-Hoernes in 1914 Vienna, Austria, Kasimir studied under Hans Frank at the Academy of Graphic Art before moving to the United States in 1936 to enroll at the Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Absorbing the rich cultural architecture of Europe during a stint in the army during World War II, Kasmir produced a prolific body of work throughout the remainder of his life, and today his pieces can be found among the collections of institutions like Yale University in New Haven and the New York Public Library. The artist died in Austria in 2002.
