Through experimentation with alternative photographic processes, Eller explores her relationship with my family, my childhood, and the spaces that surround me. Each piece created becomes an extension of who she is, how she sees herself, and how she perceives her lifeline.
This interaction between her memories and emotions takes place through the use of alternative photographic processes such as liquid light emulsion, a liquid that when painted on a surface makes the material sensitive to light. This allows Eller to physically have a hand in the way the photo is presented on the surface of the material and in the way the photos develop in the darkroom. Each work’s surface is marred by rips, scratches, or dents in response to the feelings that arise from my thoughts of a certain person or memory. Her use of materials, such as metal, relate to the emotions she has about the imagery printed on them. Eller's work focuses on a feeling of nostalgia from childhood that has come back to her as she interact with objects from her past. These memories are heavy and force her to feel the weight of responsibility that she now has as an adult. Steel metal plates are used as material to further this sense of weight that she now carries for her family. Process and material drive my work in a way that reveals the pain she has felt and they push me toward a resolution.
All pieces are printed using liquid light emulsion on steel plates.
