I had to watch where I was walking on my daily excursions because there was a lot of Prickly Pear Cactus to step around, some well hidden by the other plants. I love the variety of blues and greens displayed by the flattened stems. The spines are actually the "leaves". They protect the cactus from plant-eating animals and direct water to the roots. The flowers, borne on the edges of the stems are really pretty.
