Painting and the City

New York City in Plein Air

Have you heard the term "Slow Art"? Similar to the slow food movement it's a way to savor a painting, spend more time with just one artwork, and less time trying to see everything in a museum. Traveling to New York with my painting group Roofless Painters, I took this idea with me. My way of really visiting a place is to paint it. The skyline, bridges, parks, and museums I saw there I have a much deeper connection with now. Watching the shadow shift beneath the Brooklyn Bridge gave me time not just to paint it's reflection in the River, but to actually reflect on all that bridge has seen until I showed up on a hot September morning. Being present while expressing what I see, including the people, food, sites, and smells makes for a better painting too. I'm not looking back on my trip, it's an actual moment of me being on my trip. You can see the whole collection if you click here.
