Imagining Painting the Matilija Poppies by Lois Keller Image: This work is both a reflection of nature’s power and a deeply personal record of healing. It reimagines the Matilija poppies I have painted in plein air with oil each spring. At 56, during my first experience seeking mental health support at a rehab center, I often closed my eyes and pictured myself standing among the towering blooms, finding calm in that memory when I felt overwhelmed. Using materials I found while staying there, including tissue and medication cups, I recreated that sense of serenity and harmony through this collage.
