Albert Irvin (1922–2015) was a British abstract painter best known for strong colours, grids, bands and gestural marks. He often titled works after places in London, especially around the East End and north London, where he lived and worked for decades. “Battle Bridge” is an old name for what is now the King’s Cross area of London. Historically, “Battle Bridge” referred to a bridge over the River Fleet; the name eventually fell out of common use as “King’s Cross” became established in the 19th century.
