Have you seen where Texas turns completely wild? Alpine claims it's "the last frontier", but I think it’s a place wilder and more remote, perhaps a bend like this one along the River Road through Big Bend Ranch State Park, especially when autumn sets the thick vegetation on the riverbanks ablaze even as starkly rugged mountains guard a fickle body of water that’s seen more stories than I'll ever be able to paint.
"Where Texas Turns, Autumn on the Rio Grande" is a detailed miniature pastel landscape packed with the color and light that stick in your craw and tug at your heart and make the borderlands unforgettable. The Big River winds through thick stands of amber, russet, and coral set beneath a sky so intensely blue, you don't dare tilt your head back to look all the way up toward the heavens. This harsh land is immense, and when you (cautiously) pull off the narrow road and (very, very cautiously) stand on the cliffside and look straight down, you dare not do that too long, either.
It's the kind of place the word "awe" was designed to describe. The River Road between Lajitas and Presidio changes at every turn and it is awe-full, in the best possible way. This painting shares that awe.
This 7" x 5" original is on an archival board and framed in fine, sustainable wood—I believe the land deserves our respect—and protected under non-reflective museum-grade acrylic. I want to assure you the optimal viewing experience and also, help the environment with responsibly harvested wood. (It's a lovely, very finely crafted frame made in, where else, Texas!)
If you’re looking to bring a bit of that "last frontier" spirit, a dash of Texas on the wild side into your home, hang onto your hat: this painting is for you.
