Blossoming Century plant cluster near Alpine, Texas
Agave, commonly known as "century plants" lay claim to the high desert when they shoot up blooms. These blossom-laden stalks often grow ten or fifteen feet tall. For a decade, I've watched this circle of agaves mature. Finally, this year, they bloomed, rising from ranchland outside Alpine, Texas to touch the big southwestern sky.
