Ocotillo, with its ten or fifteen foot tall, scraggly stalks tipped with scarlet flowers provides an unexpected vertical element to the desert as well as brilliant color when it blooms. This plant framed distant San Jacinto Peak, the only other desert feature brave enough to reach toward the big blue Texas sky.
