This crumbling old adobe soaked up so much bright southwest sun, each peeling layer began to radiate its own color. The prickly pear cactus had long ago established that adobe bricks are simply pieces of earth reaching for the sky.
Late afternoon summer sunlight cast deep shadows on this "urban" adobe across the alley from a gas station in "downtown" Marfa, Texas, blending rooftops and trees with the cactus garden. Rather than feeling like ruins, the old adobe seemed warm and inviting, a cool-walled refuge from the busy world outside.
