Inspired by the new material I recently purchased. I wanted to see how much texture I could build up using a heavy body molding paste on a pre- primed canvas . Using both palette and my finger I found that a natural crest shape emerged from the application. But it wasn’t until I added a few finishing strokes of the palette knife to the downward structure that it became obvious it was a wave in motion. It took a few days to thoroughly dry before I applied the paint. My intention to keep the sky in soft muted warm tones lead me to the discovery of glazing with spritzing to interrupt the brushstrokes.
I glazed using a gel medium with blues greys and greens for the water. And the lightest tints of colbslt blue and white for the highlights on the sea foam. More glazing and thin layers of deep yellow with burnt umber were applied to the background. It’s a back and forth process which takes a while to determine if and when it’s finished. I added one last round of paint by flicking both a course bristle brush and toothbrush to created a splatter effect as the water crashes and sprays up into the air.
