This oil painting captures a timeless scene of a mule and his driver navigating the narrow steps of Maiori, a picturesque town on the Amalfi Coast. I encountered this hardworking duo while teaching a workshop in Italy, and the moment struck me as a perfect blend of tradition and daily life. Even today, the mule driver leading his companion down the stone steps is still a familiar sight and a practical way to transport goods in the steep mountain regions. The painting won First Place at the Figurative Show at the Harrisburg Art Association and was later exhibited at the Schmucker Art Gallery at Gettysburg College.
