This was painted using a plein air painting I did on site outside on this stormy day while at Doe Bay Resort on Orcas Island, WA. I started out on the bank painting but when the rain began had to move to the shelter of the overhang on our porch - much farther away from the subject. This uses both brush work and paint thickly applied with a palette knife. This gorgeous scene was full of luminous grays and I wanted to capture the power and feel of the storm. The original plein air piece was 12" x 12". I loved getting to scale this up to 16" x 16", a size that really allows you to feel like you've entered the scene.
