The Red Cross issued knitting instructions for balaclavas needed by WWII airplane crews. An Airman wrote, 'Balaclava caps [are] ... the thing we could not do without ... seems as if when you lose everything else the balaclava keeps you warm at night". Florence's knitted tea cozy acted as a trauma trigger by reminding her of her three sons in the air force. She struggled with the duality of their lives being at risk and knitting to keep them warm, conflicting with the comforting pot of tea being kept warm by a tea cozy. Balaclavas were posted often with a prayer tucked inside, "May whoever wears them come safely back again". No doubt this was Florence's prayer too.
