This work was inspired by an early Landsat image of Alberta and Montana showing how farmers use their land. Farming subsidies mean Montana farmers can afford to irrigate and intensively grow grain crops. Albertan ranchers have left their land covered in native grasses while their cattle roam within vast properties. The 150-year-old survey lines in Alberta can still be seen clearly dividing the land up into even blocks.
