Artist: Bruno Bielefeld (1879-1973)
Education and Early Development
Bielefeld received formal artistic training at the Unterrichtsanstalt des Kunstgewerbemuseums Berlin and at the Kunst- und Gewerbschule in Danzig (Gdańsk), where one of his instructors was the painter Adolf Maennchen. His education combined technical instruction in draftsmanship, design, and graphic techniques central to lithography and etching.
Career and Artistic Practice
After completing his studies, Bielefeld undertook extended study trips to Italy, France, England, Scotland, and North America, broadening his exposure to European and international art and culture. During his time in England, he founded the Empire Art Company in Liverpool before returning to Germany in 1912, settling in Berlin.
In Berlin, Bielefeld developed a body of work that chronicled the city’s historic districts, capturing old Berlin’s architecture and street life at a time of social and urban transformation. His output included city views, landscapes, etchings, lithographs, poster designs, and illustrations. Much of his early work was destroyed during World War II, but his artistic legacy continued with later depictions of postwar German urban life and, in his later years, landscapes of the Havelland region.
Legacy and Collections
Bielefeld’s work conveys a blend of technical skill and documentary interest, preserving visual records of places and moments that were altered or lost through history. Several works are held in public collections, including the Märkisches Museum Berlin and the Deutsches Museum in Munich.
