Ruhend (Resting, 1956) is one of Otto Nebel’s most serene and luminous paintings, created in Bern shortly after Schau, Spiel und Spuk. The composition unfolds within a soft red field suffused with white light, producing a gentle clarity and warmth that immediately invite calm.
At the center lies a broad yellow form illuminated from above, within which a dense gray core seems to breathe quietly. Above, a wide red brown shape spreads across the painting like a canopy, balanced by areas of black and white that establish rhythm and equilibrium.
Subtle greens and soft salmon pink accents weave through the scene, giving it quiet vitality. Through this restrained harmony of color and light, Nebel achieved a mood of stillness and reflection. Ruhend is a meditation on balance and repose, a visual pause within his otherwise dynamic sequence of works from 1956.
