William Aikman (1682–1731) was a Scottish portrait painter known for his refined and elegant depictions of aristocratic and intellectual figures. Originally trained in law, he turned to art and studied in Italy, where he absorbed the influence of classical portrait traditions. He later established a successful career in Edinburgh and London, gaining recognition for his naturalistic style and understated sophistication.
