  • Artist: Judith Brown (American, 1931-1992)

Judith Brown (1931–1992) was an American sculptor and painter born and based in New York City. Trained initially as a dancer, she brought a keen sensitivity to movement and rhythm into her visual art. After studying at Sarah Lawrence College under sculptor Theodore Roszak, she began working with welded steel and found metal, transforming discarded industrial materials into lyrical, dynamic forms.

Her sculptures often evoke draped fabric or the human body in motion, merging strength and grace through the tension of line and mass. Active from the 1950s through the early 1990s, Brown exhibited widely across the United States, completing numerous public commissions and receiving critical recognition for her ability to translate gesture and vitality into steel. Her work was widely exhibited and is in many permanent collections including the DeCordova Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the Jewish Museum and the Museum of Modern Art, to name a few. She has received many awards including the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award.
