  • Artist: Andriu Deplazes (Swiss, b. 1993)

Andriu Deplazes (born 1993, Zurich) works between Zurich and Marseille. His paintings explore the complex relationship between people and the natural world. He often creates large, luminous landscapes populated by human and animal figures that feel both familiar and strange. These scenes sit somewhere between dream and reality, inviting the viewer to reflect on how we shape nature and how nature in turn shapes us.

Deplazes’s imagery is lush and vibrant yet never purely idyllic. His use of intense, sometimes fluorescent colour and his soft, fluid brushwork lend his works a charged atmosphere, beautiful but uneasy. The figures in his paintings, often androgynous or ambiguous, seem to merge with their surroundings, suggesting the fragility of boundaries between body, environment, and emotion.

Drawing on both art historical references and contemporary concerns, Deplazes updates the tradition of landscape painting for the present moment. His worlds are alive with tension between intimacy and distance, humanity and wilderness, vulnerability and power. Through these painterly fictions he asks how we live with and within nature today.
