  • Artist: Abe Ajay (American, 1919-1998)

Abe Ajay (1919–1998) was an American artist born in Altoona, Pennsylvania, to Syrian immigrant parents. He studied at the Art Students League and the American Artists School in New York and began his career as an illustrator and printmaker for The New Masses. In the 1960s, he shifted his focus to creating intricate wall reliefs from wood, found materials, and industrial components.

Ajay’s work bridges painting and sculpture, characterized by geometric structure, balance, and architectural rhythm. His constructions often convey a quiet sense of order and spirituality, using repetition and depth to create visual harmony reminiscent of sculptors such as Louise Nevelson.

His work is held in major institutions: for example, the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY), the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (NY), the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (Washington DC), and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

From 1978 onward he served as a professor of visual arts at the State University of New York at Purchase (SUNY Purchase) in New York.

He lived in New York City and later in Bethel, Connecticut.
