“Growing up in New Mexico, I developed an inquisitive spirit. I recall a girl with an endless supply of questions. If an answer wasn’t readily available, I would mull things over in my mind until I figured out a solution. I used drawing to express youthful dreams, to experience what I imagined, and to re-tell the stories I was picking up around me. The drawing was a means to explore what I didn’t fully understand, yet.
In junior high school, an art teacher introduced me to drawing from life. Instead of only a mind’s eye, I had new tools to begin aligning my skills with what I could see in front of me.”— Leah Lopez
A native of New Mexico, Leah studied traditional drawing and painting in Los Angeles and the Southwest before moving to New York in 2007. The youth and mystique of her home state charged her imagination. Steeped in tradition and the observation of light, she came to New York to enjoy East coast sensibility and the old-world masters. Her primary medium is luminous oil paint, but she also enjoys the textural qualities of soft pastel and charcoal.
Her work has been exhibited at the Haggin Museum, the Booth Western Museum, Steamboat Art Museum, and prestigious establishments such the Salmagundi Club, the New York Academy of Art, the National Association of Women Artists, Oil Painters of America, and Art Renewal Center. She is currently represented by New Master's Gallery in Carmel, Trees Place in Cape Cod, and Grand Bohemian Gallery in Saint Augustine, Florida.
