Often when we think of bamboo we visualize serenity and peace. Frank Fleming takes a different approach to bamboo as an art form. He creates an atmosphere of whimsy and playfulness with his piece, Five Ceremonial Poles. The poles are covered in bright patterns of wire that wrap around the trees. Playfulness is a common theme in Fleming's work which he developed from his childhood.
Fleming gravitated to the wilderness growing up due to his speech impediment that caused him to struggle in school. The place he found solace was in nature and he expressed himself using images he was surrounded by being outside. He is inspired by animals and plants immensely, hence the use of flora and fauna in his work. During his time in college, Fleming started to explore his artistic style, but he always stayed true to his themes of nature. He describes himself as “a redneck Alabama boy” and he uses the natural resources that are abundant around him.
